IDeA Night 2015


The Department of Accountancy (DoA), University of Kelaniya witnessed the 16th consecutive year an IDeA Night on February 25, 2015 at Hotel Galadari, Colombo. The star studded event is expected to bring together senior partners of Audit firms, Corporate executives, CEO’s and just passed out accounting graduates of the University of Kelaniya.
This event was graced by Prof. Sunanda Madduma Bandara, Vice Chancellor – University of Kelaniya, H.E. (Mr.) Y.K. Sinha, High Commissioner in India to Sri Lanka, Mr. Lasantha Wickremasinghe, Vice President, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka.
The highlights of the event were felicitating internship training partners, launching an online journal of case studies in Accounting and give away certificates to 106 interns who have successfully completed the internship in accounting. Mr. Dilshan Koralage was awarded a Gold Medal by CA Sri Lanka, as the Best Achiever of the internship programme in year 2015.

Dr. Wasanthi Madurapperuma, Head, Department of Accountancy in her speech congratulated all the students for their brilliant achievements. She said “….internship in accounting programme provides students with valuable hands on learning experience and teach the skills necessary for a career in advanced Accounting and Finance”.

H.E. (Mr.) Y.K. Sinha, High Commissioner in India to Sri Lanka appreciating the industry partners and said, “….most employers are looking for candidates that equipped themselves with a high level of confidence and being more advanced in critical thinking and problem solving skills in order to adapt themselves to the demands of the working world…”.
Prof. Sunanda Madduma Bandara, Vice Chancellor – University of Kelaniya  said “……internship programme has greatly increased student’s accounting knowledge, team working skills and communication skills which will give them the skills required to further progress in their career…”.

Later, the certificates were handed over to the students by the Vice Chancellor, University of Kelaniya, High Commissioner in India to Sri Lanka, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies and the Vice President of CA Sri Lanka.
The settings of the day just right for an ambiance of appreciation, camaraderie and fellowship for academics, students and corporate executives.

About Department of Accountancy

The Department of Accountancy (DoA) is one of the five departments in the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya. At present, it conducts the Bachelor of Business Management (Special) Accountancy degree program. The vision of the department is to make the Accountancy program, the first choice among the students and stakeholders. The mission of the department is to advance Accountancy education through Bachelor of Business Management (Special) Accountancy degree which provides outstanding Accounting and management education for students, create and disseminate knowledge, promote the understanding and ethical practice of Accountancy profession and serve the community.

DoA is committed to pursue excellence in research, teaching and consultancy services. The greatest strength of the department is its faculty which consists of academic and professional qualified in diverse management disciplines such as Accounting, Finance and Management fields. They are able to blend the theoretical knowledge with the practical exposure which will enhance the efficiency of teaching methodologies. DoA always designs its degree programmers to meet the changing demands of the public and private sector.

DoA was able to win a competitive grant, worth Rs.100 million from the World Bank under the project on Improving Relevance and Quality of Undergraduate Education (IRQUE) in the year 2005. The said project has been successfully completed by disbursing total monitory allocations. It is worthy to note that doctoral degree grant recipients returned to the DoA after completing their Ph.Ds related to small business and entrepreneurship. Their research findings are highly relevant to solve current economic problems in Sri Lanka, specially nurturing the small business sector and entrepreneurship development.
